So you’re going to improve your local playground. What’s your great idea?

The playground at Stephenson Elementary School serves the students and neighborhood by providing a place for exercise and recreation. The main playground area does not provide accommodations for handicapped access. A separate play area with a solid rubberized surface is proposed for several spin-style and hand generated play components. The current site was formerly a sand box and has been dug out in a way that creates a tripping hazard.

How will you involve local volunteers in the playground project?

Stephenson Elementary students and their families and neighborhood volunteers will do the preparation of the area, including excavating and leveling, removal of a small tree and any other surface preparation necessary.

Which local nonprofit, school, or park district will you work with, and how will you work with them to choose a playground for the project?

Stephenson Elementary School and Stephenson Elementary PTA. A design has already been proposed and approved by school staff.

Tell us about the kids that will be using the playground.

The Stephenson Elementary playground provides a space for exercise and recreation for students while school is in session. Year round, it draws children and their families from the surrounding neighborhoods as a place to meet and play. Many people walk or run on the grounds.
