I ride my bike and play tennis in Coquillard Park and I've noticed a great community of people who use the park on a daily basis. The people who live along Campeau St. and Arthur St. (bordering the park) come out on their porches watching their children play in the park. Unfortunately, the park is a little run down, with few benches and the basketball court in particular is well-worn. I thought it would be nice to replace the old basketball hoop with a height-adjustable new hoop with new nets so kids of all ages can use it (and they can stop using a nearby oil drum to reach the rim to dunk!)
By collaborating with the City of South Bend Parks Department and leaders at the Perley Primary Fine Arts Academy, along with members of the neighborhood (both adults and kids), I would hope to gather input and ideas from the community about how to best put our resources to good use serving the park and the surrounding area.
By coordinating with city officials, I think it would be fun to install the basketball hoops and benches in conjunction with a "Day of Service" or general park clean-up day. This would engage neighbors to join the effort to clean up and modernize the park and take ownership of the project.
The kids that use this playground go to Perley Primary Fine Arts Academy (K-4) located at the West end of the park, as well as kids who live in the surrounding neighborhood. Kids that range from very young all the way through high school and some college aged kids use Coquillard Park.
