Recess is most kids favorite subject in elementary school. It can also be a very chaotic, scary, and unsafe time for kids where bullying, scraps, and fights disrupt the learning environment. When recess is fun, safe, active, and inclusive kids get all the physical, emotional, and social benefits of playing. Studies show that a colorful playground, with clear boundaries and obvious play spaces not only gets more kids playing, but keeps them playing. That's why we want to map out and paint Playworks partner schools. Put a colorful, well thought out playground in the hands of our trained coaches and the opportunities for our students are endless.
Our project will be a partnership between Playworks (local non-profit) and John Muir Elementary. Playworks staff and coaches will work with the principal, PE staff and teachers at the school to come up with the plan for their playground.
With the funds supplied through this challenge we will buy all the supplies needed for the project.
We will tap into our corporate partner, school communities, local supporters and parents to rally together and complete this project. It is important that not only the whole school community is bought into maintaining the playground but also that the students see how supported they are by the greater community.
John Muir Elementary is a low-income SFUSD elementary school. It will be our first year partnering with this school and its well-deserving students. The playground is the kids zone, they feel a lot of ownership over the games and spaces set aside for them to play, make friends, and learn to work together. By making it a beautiful, functional, and fun as possible we are also transforming the recess experience for our students.
